===Stacker 4.0 Update===
This Stacker 4.0 Update (S4UP.EXE) contains everything you
need to update your system. It includes:
--Reduced memory footprint if you are using QEMM 7.5
--Complete Windows for Workgroups, 32-bit file access compatibilty
--Improved Stacker Optimizer uses extended memory while defragmenting.
Note: If your system doesn't have extended memory, the Optimizer uses
conventional memory. See your User's Guide for more information about the
Stacker Optimizer.
You must already have Stacker 4.0 installed on your system
to use this update. If you are using QEMM 7.5, Multimedia Stacker,
or Windows for Workgroups, please perform the steps following the
installation instructions.
----------------------------------------
Installation Instructions
----------------------------------------
1. If you received this update on a floppy, insert the
floppy disk into drive A or B. If you downloaded this update,
you need to know into which directory you copied the file
S4UP.EXE.
2. If you are in Windows, exit Windows completely.
3. Change to the Stacker directory. If C:\STACKER is your
Stacker directory, at a C: prompt type CD \STACKER and
press ENTER.
4. Copy the file S4UP.EXE from its directory (or from floppy) to your
Stacker directory. (For example, type COPY B:S4UP.EXE and press
ENTER.)
5. From your Stacker directory, type S4UP and press ENTER to unarchive
the file. Then, type SUPDATE and press ENTER to run the update
program.
Note: The message "Cannot update this driver version" means one of
two things. You already have the lastest Stacker update on your
system, so you do not need this update. Or, you have a Stacker
version prior to 4.0 installed; install Stacker 4.0 first.
6. Restart your computer.
How to locate your Stacker directory:
1. At a DOS prompt, type ED /I and press ENTER to show your
STACKER.INI file.
2. Find a line that includes /DIR=.
The path that follows the equal sign is your Stacker directory.
3. Press the ALT key, followed by F, then X to close the editor.
----------------------------------------
QEMM 7.5
----------------------------------------
This part of the update is valid only with DOS 6 or later.
==To take advantage of lower memory footprint with QEMM 7.5
1. From your Stacker directory, type ED /I and press ENTER.
2. Press ENTER to insert a new line.
3. Type /QD on the new line.
4. Press the ALT key, followed by F, then press X to exit
the editor.
5. When asked if you want to save the changes, press Y.
6. Restart your system to put the change into effect.
----------------------------------------
Multimedia Stacker
----------------------------------------
This update sets Stacker compression to MaxSpace. Multimedia
Stacker uses the MaxSpeed setting by default. Use one of these
procedures to set the tuning back to MaxSpeed after installing
S4UP.
==To set tuning to MaxSpeed under Windows
1. Open the Stacker Windows Toolbox.
2. Select a Stacker drive in the drive bar.
3. Click the Tune icon.
4. Click the MaxSpeed icon, then click OK.
5. Close or minimize the Toolbox.
==To set tuning to MaxSpeed under DOS
1. From your Stacker directory, type TUNER and press ENTER.
2. Press up-arrow to highlight Fastest Speed or click it.
3. Press C or click Continue.
----------------------------------------
Windows for Workgroups
----------------------------------------
Stacker now works seamlessly with Windows« for Workgroups (WFW)
3.11 32-bit file access (32BFA). Stacker requires no special options
or configurations. You do however, have to explicitly turn on 32BFA
and enable lazy writes. The following steps explain how.
==To turn on 32BFA
1. From within Windows, open the Control Panel in the Main Group
and double-click the 386 Enhanced icon.
2. Click the Virtual Memory button, and on the next screen, click the
Change button.
3. At the bottom of the dialog box, check the 32-bit file access box.
A cache size appears in the adjacent window. Accept the default setting
for now. If you want to change it later, you can.
Note: Ensure that you check the 32-bit file access; checking only 32-bit
disk access will not increase performance.
4. Click OK.
5. Then click Yes to make the changes to virtual memory.
6. Click Restart Computer to make the changes take effect.
==To enable lazy writes in WFW
1. From the Program Manager's File menu, choose Run.
2. In the Command Line box, type SYSEDIT and press ENTER.
3. Select the window that contains your SYSTEM.INI file and in the
[386Enh] section, type the line ForceLazyOn= followed by
the drive letter(s) of your Stacker drive(s). For example, if your
Stacker drives are C:, D:, and E:, you would insert the following line:
ForceLazyOn=CDE
4. Save the file and exit the editor.
5. Exit and restart Windows to put the changes into effect.
----------------------------------------
Common 32BFA Workarounds
----------------------------------------
If you have trouble initializing 32BFA in Windows for Workgroups, here are
some common workarounds that might help:
* Make sure you are using a permanent swap file. 32BFA will not initialize
properly with temporary swap files.
* Be sure to close any open files or files (such as printer caches) that
are open by a line in your Autoexec.bat file.
* After turning on 32BFA, ensure these lines are in the [386Enh] section
of your SYSTEM.INI file:
device=vfat.386
device=ios.386
device=vxdldr.386
These lines mean a Real Mode Mapper (RMM) is loaded.
* Make sure the "minfilecache=" entry in the [vcache] section of the
SYSTEM.INI is appropriate for the amount of memory you have.
For example, a 2-MB cache would be appropriate for a system with
8 MB RAM.
* If the DOS SUBST command is run before Windows for Workgroups loads,
32-bit file access will not initialize.
* If you started the real mode network (NET START FULL or NET START
BASIC) and then start Windows for Workgroups, 32-bit file access will
not initialize.
For information about other system conditions that might interfere with
using 32BFA, check with Microsoft.
